Hiking with Reinhard

Hiking in summer time

Summer

Recently, our marketing team had the opportunity to go on a hike toward Birnbachloch in Leogang with hiking guide and sauna master Reinhard. The Riederalm offers weekly guided hikes that showcase the region’s most beautiful spots. These hikes highlight the most stunning locations in the Leogang-Saalfelden region. As a guest, you’ll discover places you’ve never been to before and gain valuable insights into the natural beauty of the Leogang area. These hikes are always particularly exciting because Reinhard knows the area inside and out and has always planned new, thrilling, and fascinating tours around Leogang for our guests.

We had the opportunity to ask him a few questions and are happy to share an excerpt with you:

Michaela: The Riederalm is in a great location for hikes that start right from the hotel. Can you recommend some easy hikes for us?

Reinhard: The easiest activity starting from the hotel is to take the Asitzbahn up the mountain. The lift is right next to the hotel, so it’s perfect! Once on the mountain, you can enjoy walks along circular hiking trails. But on the opposite side—our sunny side—you can also hike from the Badhaus Leogang to the Riedlalm. The Badhaus, in turn, is a place steeped in history in Leogang. It used to be a popular health resort for the sick. Locals and hikers can continue from the Riedlalm to the Riedlspitz, which is a special place of power. The “Forest Bathing Trail” from the Steinbergbahn valley station up to the Asitz is also particularly popular.

Michaela: Leogang is, of course, closely tied to the history of mining. Do you have any other excursion tips for us when the weather isn’t so nice?

Reinhard: If the weather isn’t so great, I can recommend a hike with an umbrella to the Schwarzleotal valley. There’s a tourist mine there that offers guided tours. The tour lasts about 1.5 hours. You get a great helmet and a nice jacket. It can get pretty cramped inside the mine, so you shouldn’t have a fear of enclosed spaces. A good jacket and sturdy shoes are essential, since the temperature is only 6–7 degrees Celsius.
Michaela: Do you have a favorite hike in Leogang?
Reinhard: Yes, I really love hiking in the Ullachtal here—especially now, when everything is in bloom and nature is truly coming to life. But it’s also beautiful in the fall: thanks to the mixed forest, the valley glows in the most beautiful colors in September and October—from yellow to orange to deep red.
I also really enjoy hiking up to the Riedlspitz. And I always recommend a trip to the Sinnlehenalm for families—it’s a lovely destination that’s wonderful to experience together.

Michaela: You already mentioned fall—so I wanted to ask again: Are there any bike tours you’d particularly recommend?
Reinhard: Yes, definitely. For anyone who isn’t so keen on downhill riding, there are some really beautiful routes right here in the valley. One of them, for example, is the Buchensteinwand Tour. It’s about 45 to 48 kilometers long and offers truly stunning scenery.
For those who’d like to do a longer loop, I’d recommend the Steinbergrunde. At around 70 kilometers, it’s significantly longer—so you’ll definitely need to be able to sit in the saddle for a while.
And of course, there’s also the option of riding toward Zell am See. That’s another very beautiful tour, and if you feel like it, you can even ride around the lake once more because it’s so beautiful.

Now that Reinhard has given you some recommendations for great hikes in Leogang, we on the marketing team would also like to share two of our absolute highlights with you.

Although these aren’t right on our doorstep, they’re definitely worth seeing:

The first excursion tip is in Saalfelden: the Biberg with its summer toboggan run. With the Saalfelden Leogang Card, you can use the small, rustic chairlift for free every day. Once you reach the top, feel free to go for a short hike or a stroll. After a quick break on the mountain or at the mountain inn, you can zoom down the mountain on a toboggan (weather permitting) along a 1.6-km track featuring 61 turns and 3 jumps.

Another destination we’ve chosen is the Seisenbergklamm gorge in Weißbach near Lofer. It’s a great place to visit no matter the weather—whether it’s a summery 30 degrees or even if it’s drizzling a bit. As you climb the stairs up through the gorge, you’re always treated to an extraordinary natural spectacle.

If you’ve been bitten by the hiking bug in the Leogang mountains, you’re welcome to come see for yourself.

We look forward to meeting you.
