The Peter-Wiechenthaler Hut

A Gem High Above Saalfelden

From the region

The Peter-Wiechenthaler Hut is far more than just a stopover – it’s a place to arrive, breathe deeply, and enjoy. Whether as the goal of an extended day hike or as a starting point for alpine adventures, here you can truly feel the special magic of the mountains.

Perched at 1,752 meters above Saalfelden, it offers a breathtaking view of the “Steinerne Meer” (Stone Sea) and serves as an ideal starting point for numerous mountain tours. It’s no wonder that it’s a popular destination for both locals and visitors. Our Good-Life team also set out on the panoramic trail to the hut on August 27, 2025, as part of our summer incentive.

The Ascent – Pure Nature

The hike begins at the Bachwinkl parking lot in Saalfelden. At first, a wide forest road gently ascends, before a narrow, more varied trail leads across the suspension bridge. From here, the path becomes steeper and more challenging, yet rewards hikers with ever-changing views.

Our guide, Reinhard – whose guided tours are also available to guests – ensured both well-timed breaks and fascinating insights into the alpine flora and fauna. After about 2 to 3 hours of walking, the hut is reached, with the final section noticeably steeper. Even along the way, light forest sections and small steps give a taste of the panorama awaiting at the top.

Important: sturdy footwear and enough water are essential. The route is suitable for experienced and sure-footed hikers.

At the Hut – Warm Hospitality & Culinary Delights

Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed by the unmistakable charm of an alpine hut: rustic, cozy, and marked by genuine hospitality. The sun terrace invites guests to linger, offering sweeping views over the Saalfelden basin and the surrounding majestic peaks.

Culinary delights are also plentiful: from traditional “Kaspressknödel” on crisp salad, vegetable curry, to sweet treats. Our team, of course, indulged in a well-deserved meal after the climb – and, as always, a Kaiserschmarrn tastes incomparable when enjoyed in the mountains.

Activities Around the Hut

Those with energy left after resting will find numerous ways to extend their mountain experience around the hut. Particularly ambitious climbers are drawn to Persailhorn (2,347 m) – a summit accessible via two secured climbing routes.

From the hut, a marked trail heads east, where the most exciting part of the tour begins:

  • The South Wall Route (difficulty B/C)

  • The slightly more challenging North Wall Route (C)

Both routes require sure-footedness, a head for heights, and the proper equipment, but promise an unforgettable experience. After about 2 hours of ascent, you reach the summit and are rewarded with a stunning panorama – from the Salzach Valley and the Stone Sea to deep into the Hohe Tauern mountains.

The Persailhorn is not an ordinary hiking mountain but an alpine adventure combining physical challenge, thrills, and breathtaking nature.

Overnight Stay in the Mountains

For those wishing to fully immerse themselves in the magic of the mountains, overnight stays at the hut are possible. Options include cozy rooms and dormitory-style sleeping areas. This allows you to enjoy the sunset high above the valley in peace – or set off early the next morning on a summit tour while the first sun rays turn the cliffs golden.
