Birnbachloch

Our hotel hike with manager Friedl Herbst

The lowest glacier in Europe

Duration: approx. 1 ½ hours to the top

The hike starts in Leogang’s Ullachtal / Passauer Hütte and proceeds initially through woodland, then along the hiking path through pastures and later more rocky terrain up to the Birnbachloch at 1320m. The Birnbachloch is a karstic spring which has an "entrance hall" some 20 metres wide. The Birnbach has its source inside the hall. As well as the Birnbachloch, a few hundred metres away, the Birnbach glacier awaits hikers, Central Europe’s lowest glacier. The glacier can look back on a significant history, since at the end of the 19th century Munich beer breweries obtained the ice for their ice cellars here. The blocks of ice were over one hundred metres in length and were transported down the mountain via wooden slides.
